The season 2 finale of “Invincible” has left viewers feeling like it wasn’t a typical season closer. This deviation from expectations is characteristic of the show’s unconventional approach. Instead of concluding with a massive cliffhanger, the finale delivers a gripping and emotionally charged showdown between Invincible and Angstrom Levy.
Spoiler alert: In a pivotal moment, Invincible violates his no-kill rule after Levy repeatedly threatens his family’s lives and his own. Despite Levy’s claims of being upgraded to match Mark’s strength, Mark’s Viltrumite heritage ultimately prevails, reducing Levy to a defeated foe on a desolate world. However, Mark is left grappling with the consequences of his actions, fearing that this loss of control marks the beginning of a descent into the same murderous path as his father, as depicted in numerous alternate universes where he succumbs to his darker instincts.
The performances by Steven Yeun and Sterling K. Brown are hailed as exceptional, particularly during the intense battle sequence. While not the bloodiest encounter in the series, the significance lies in its impact on Mark’s character development. As a result, Mark makes drastic decisions, dropping out of college, avoiding Amber, and withholding his feelings for Eve. He enters the next season adrift, haunted by the looming threat of his Viltrumite overlords demanding his allegiance or Earth’s demise.
In the limited time available, a glimpse of hope is seen as Monster Girl tentatively accepts assistance for her aging issue. Additionally, Allen hints at a plan to liberate Omni-Man from prison, suggesting that he possesses greater strength than he initially reveals. Despite Omni-Man’s apparent resignation to face his fate, it’s doubtful that he will meet his end at the gallows.
During Mark’s battle, viewers were treated to several playful nods, including an unlicensed cameo of Spider-Man (originally Spider-Man in the comics), a reference to Batman, and an unexpected moment where Mark strikes Levy with a Fortnite sniper rifle. These moments added a touch of fun to the intense showdown.
As the rather peculiar season 2 comes to a close, it’s worth noting the lengthy journey it took to arrive and the divisive decision to split it in half, much to the dismay of many viewers. Although Robert Kirkman has assured fans that the wait for season 3 won’t be as prolonged, considering the over two-year gap for season 2, it’s hard to find comfort in those words without concrete release dates. It’s highly unlikely that we’ll see a new season within just a year.
Despite its irregular pacing, “Invincible” remains an excellent show. However, thanks to Amazon, the finale was marred by the inconvenience of multiple unskippable ads for Play-doh during my viewing, adding a blemish to an otherwise powerful conclusion to the season.
