Plot

Maximus Decimus Meridius is a brilliant Roman general who has led his army to victory in a series of battles against the Germanic tribes. After the war, Maximus is called back to Rome by Emperor Marcus Aurelius, who intends to name him his successor. However, Commodus, Marcus Aurelius’s son, is jealous of Maximus and murders his father, taking the throne for himself.

Commodus frames Maximus for Marcus Aurelius’s murder and has him sent to be executed. Maximus escapes and is sold into slavery, where he is forced to become a gladiator. Maximus quickly rises through the ranks of the gladiators, becoming one of the most popular and successful fighters in Rome.

Commodus eventually learns of Maximus’s true identity and arranges for him to fight in a duel to the death. Maximus defeats Commodus in the duel, but is mortally wounded in the process. Before he dies, Maximus exposes Commodus’s crimes to the Roman people, and Commodus is killed by his sister, Lucilla.

Themes

Gladiator is a film about revenge, redemption, and the power of the human spirit. Maximus is a man who is stripped of everything he holds dear, but he never gives up hope. He fights his way back from the brink of death and ultimately achieves his revenge on Commodus.
